A Message from Totowa Mayor John Coiro - Sunday, December 21, 2025
Totowa Residents,

On Friday, December 19, 2025, I was contacted by the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office and advised that our Police Chief, Carmen Veneziano, was being detained for felony charges stemming from an incident that occurred in Massachusetts in September of 2025. Mr. Veneziano had an extradition hearing later in the day on Friday. Following the hearing, he was transferred to the Bergen County Jail and is awaiting transport to Massachusetts, where he will appear in court. While I did not see the exact charges in writing, the Prosecutor’s Office did relay to me that these charges were serious in nature and considered felonies.

On Friday afternoon, December 19, 2025, based on the situation and after consultation with the two senior members of our Public Safety Committee, I immediately suspended Mr. Veneziano without pay until the legal process is concluded.

We will be appointing an Interim Police Chief shortly. Please know that the Totowa Police Department will continue to operate effectively in providing services to our community.
