Mayor John Coiro

Elected : 1999 (Elected to Council in 1987)

John Coiro is a native of Totowa presently residing at 107 Liberty Ridge Trail with his wife, Marygrace.  He has two children, Alyssa married to Allan, and Matthew, married to Emily.  And he has two granddaughters, Ava and Giuliana.


John is a graduate of Memorial Grammar School and Passaic Valley High School. He continued his education at Seton Hall University where, in 1981, he graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Accounting.  In 1990, he received his Master’s Degree in Taxation at Seton Hall.  John is a Certified Public Accountant and licensed in New Jersey.  He is currently employed as an Executive Tax Director with the international accounting firm of Ernst & Young located in Iselin, NJ.  In 2007/2008, John served as President of the New Jersey Society of Certified Public Accountants (NJSCPA), an organization with 15,000 members and is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. He also served on the Board of Advisors for the Center for Entrepreneurial Studies at Seton Hall.

John is currently serving his seventh term as Mayor, having first been elected in 1999.  Before becoming Mayor, he was a member of the Council for 12 years and the Totowa Board of Education for 2 years. In 2012, he was inducted into the League of Municipalities Mayors Hall of Fame.  In 2013, John was honored by the NJSCPA to its 50 over 50 year list of CPAs for his ongoing contributions to the CPA profession and the community.  John is also a member of the Totowa Borough Italian-American Independent Club and a member of Legislative Committee for League of Municipalities.


John and his family are parishioners at St. James Roman Catholic Church in Totowa.
